Brief Overview of the Russian CAD/PLM Market: June-Aug, 2009

David Levin

Dear friends and colleagues,

I present you the 19th brief isicad report about the main events of the Russia & CIS CAD/PLM market – related mainly to June-August. Such reports have been distributed, in a form of my newsletters, since 2004 when the First isicad PLM+ERP International Forum was held. This tradition of (about) quarterly reports was continued after the Second and Third isicad Forums. 2009 is not a year of the isicad- biennial Forums, however it was decided to extend the genre of isicad events by organizing an isicad Round Table to be hold very soon – in couple weeks (see below).

Previously, isicad newsletter were distributed just by e-mail, starting from today we will publish such reports as the isicad.net articles. Such reports are associated with cover pages like a clickable picture, which you can see in this message. The headlines of today’s report are as follows:

  • News from the Russian CAD/PLM companies
  • Leaders of the global CAD/PLM industry are strengthening their positions in Russia
  • It seems that aviation business does not suffer from the crisis and needs CAD/PLM
  • Future of CAD: Round Table in Moscow Sheraton Palace Hotel

I. News from the Russian CAD/PLM companies

1.1. A Russian company APPIUS (www.appius.ru) is known for its proprietary non-expensive designs in PDM, which it integrates with not only CAD-components but also with the ERP-systems, popular in Russia. Recently Appius accomplished a full-scale integration of its major PDM+ERP module with SolidWorks.

1.2. ASCON — the largest Russian CAD/PLM company and the only Russian company in this field that is continuously included in the top 100 Russian IT-firms; by 2008 performance, all rating agencies moved ASCON several points up in their annual ratings. Lately the company is pursuing an active marketing policy, including regular publications of its press-releases in English; below are some of their publications in the last few months:

1.3. A Russian company Cadezy joined the Open Design Alliance and announced a forthcoming beta-testing of DeskCAD LT. The company was founded by enthusiasts who aspired to nothing less than revolutionizing the global CAD market. The key feature of Cadezy's CAD-products under development by Cadezy is using the web as the platform for their applications. For more details, see the isicad article.

1.4. A Russian company LEDAS reported several important achievements directly related to the main field of their specialization — development of a parameterization technology for geometric models and applications for various CAD-packages on the basis of this technology:

LEDAS news can now be read at the company's micro-blog: http://twitter.com/ledasgroup.

1.5. One of the leading Russian CAD/PLM companies Top Systems (well-known by its Tflex system) organized an IT Forum «New Russian PLM-solutions to the Russian Industries», where it displayed in operation a new document flow system T-FLEX DOCs 2010.

Top Systems and TraceParts announced that the TraceParts model library is available to the users of T-FLEX CAD, without any restrictions or fees, and models are presented directly in the T-FLEX format. Now the users of T-FLEX CAD can enjoy a unique opportunity to directly access a vast database of bought-in and standard products of the leading global vendors.

II. Global CAD/PLM leaders are strengthening their posititons in Russia

2.1. One of the major news for the PLM market is strengthening the positions of Siemens PLM Software and the appointment of Steffen Buchwald as the vice president and managing director of the Central and Eastern Europe operating region, which includes Russian operations. In this role, Mr. Buchwald is responsible for increasing Siemens PLM Software's market share and leadership in the region.

Isicad.net published an interview with Mr. Buchwald, where you can see his answers to TenLinks questionnaire. It seems that in the near future popular opinion will associate Siemens not only with high-quality appliances but also with at least the same quality level software that supports production throughout all lifecycle stages.

Siemens PLM Software announced a long-term cooperation agreement with «United Aircraft Building Corporation» under which Teamcenter will be used as a standard PDM system and NX — as one of the main CAD/CAM/CAE systems.

2.2. PTC and its St.Petersburg partner «Irisoft» organized PTC Innovation Forum 2009 in St Petersburg. One of the key-note speakers was Jonathan Boyce, the vice-president for Northern Europe, who gave an analysis of commercial and military shipbuilding. PTC makes no secret that its major plans for 2009 incorporate close work with the Russian shipbuilding industry.

In August, PTC organized a round table for SMB where the company presented a localized version of Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 and Windchill ProductPoint. During the event, specialists from the Russian office of PTC demonstrated to the customers how to make CAD design (based on Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0.) for a task promptly selected right during the round table.

2.3. The Russian office of Autodesk announced launching the program for accelerating return on investments by Russian industries, which outlines the following two strategies — «state-by-stage licensing» (for those wishing to use reliable licensed software with minimum initial investments) and «productivity enhancement». For information about the program see the interview with Anastasia Morozova, Field Marketing Area Team Manager, Autodesk Russia and CIS.

For several consecutive years Autodesk holds its Forums in big Russian cities to spread knowledge about the company's products to all regions of Russia, including the most remote areas. This year (September, 23) for the first time their Forum, under the slogan «The world is changing: the winner will be the one who is ready to change», will combine more than 100 seminars, conferences and test-drives organized by the Autodesk authorized partners in 40 cities in Russia and CIS.

2.4. The Russian office of Dassault Systemes is actively making preparations for its annual PLM Forum, which will take place in Moscow on October 15. It will be the 5th DS Forum is Russia, to which isicad.ru traditionally gives detailed coverage, see, for instance, a photo report from PLM Forum 2008.

DS signed a strategic alliance agreement with the Antonov Aeronautical Scientific/Technical Complex, of Ukraine, and entered into a contract with «Kamov», a Russian helicopter producer, for implementing CATIA and ENOVIA Smarteam. During the MAKS-2009 air show (see below) DS signed an agreement with Russian Federal Space Agency (ROSKOSMOS) aiming at broad usage of DS PLM-solutions (CATIA, DELMIA, ENOVIA) for digital prototyping, collaborative design, building industrial reusable models, efficient data flow maintenance, and other.

III. It seems that aviation business does not suffer from the crisis and needs CAD/PLM

3.1. A good part of PLM-news about Russia and CIS came from Le Bourget, a Parisian suburb, the home of «The 48th International Paris Air Show — Le Bourget». Along with the above-mentioned large contracts for implementing CAD/PLM solutions in the Russian and CIS market, let's emphasize advances of the Russian aircraft «Sukhoi Superjet 100» in Le Bourget. Apart from successful demonstration of the aircraft, «Sukhoi» OJSC signed a contract with Hungarian Malev for buying 30 aircrafts for the overall cost of around $1 billion. The first commercial flight of «Sukhoi Superjet 100» is scheduled for the end of December.«Sukhoi Superjet 100» is being successfully implemented with a full-scale use of PLM methods and technologies — in cooperation between Russian design and manufacturing firms and Dassault Systemes and Siemens PLM Software.

3.2. MAKS-2009 Air Show was held on August 18-22August near Moscow, representing all leading CAD/PLM vendors. The overall amount of business contracts signed at this air show is about 10 billion dollars. See the isicad.net photo gallery presenting some MAKS-2009 images.

IV. The Round Table «Talking About the Future of CAD»

The event take place on September 8, 2009 in Moscow at 2.30 p.m. at the «Moskva» conference hall of Sheraton Palace Hotel (19, 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya St., Moscow, Russia). The Round Table is organized by the isicad as part of Ralph Grabowski’s visit to Russia. Mr Grabowski is a well-known expert on CAD, journalist and editor of a popular CAD-publication upfront.eZine, his blog worldcadaccess, and other. More details about the Round Table (including the topics to be discussed) can be found here and in Ralph Grabowski's publications. Isicad.net will present a detailed report on these events.
