ODA starts development for STEP support

Alexey Ershov, CEO of LEDAS: The Open Design Alliance (ODA) has long been recognized as a pillar of the CAD interoperability market. With its leading position in the DWG API world, and in the class of 2D solutions as a whole, it has never faced a serious challenge. Several years ago, the ODA significantly expanded its product line by adding support for Revit files and the IFC standard. Both are key data formats in the fast-growing 3D BIM industry.

Something, however, was missing: in all those years it could offer no solid 3D solution. The 3D capabilities of DWG have not attracted as much market interest as STEP, the long-standing and now popular 3D CAD data exchange format.

And so the news about the ODA starting work on supporting the STEP [STandard for the Exchange of Product model data] standard suggests to me that the ODA will become one of the main players in the 2D/3D interoperability market. It also suggests that the ODA has the potential to become its leader.

It's important to note that in addition to STEP, the ODA is working on other large, ambitious projects, such as tools for creating and editing 3D models (usually implemented only in full-fledged geometric kernels) and a sensational new Scan-to-BIM project.

The ability to develop software simultaneously in several key areas of modern CAD and BIM is a serious claim for long-term success. LEDAS is honored in its continuous collaboration with the ODA as we tackle cutting edge software development.

Scottsdale, AZ: July 19th, 2021 — Open Design Alliance (ODA), the leading provider of CAD and BIM interoperability solutions, announced today that it has started work on a new Software Development Kit (SDK) for STEP. STEP is the exchange standard defined by ISO 10303 for representing and communicating digital product information. STEP is widely supported by leading mechanical CAD applications as a neutral standard for the exchange of 3D model data.

“In a recent survey, more than 50% of ODA members expressed interest in STEP,” said Neil Peterson, ODA President. “To meet the demand in this area, we’ve initiated development of our new STEP SDK, a complete interoperability solution for STEP. The SDK will support STEP access, creation and conversion, and will be fully integrated with ODA visualization technology for fast viewing of STEP models on desktop, mobile and cloud.

“As STEP is an open format, we’ll be offering STEP SDK as a part of our standard ODA membership package—any company that’s already an ODA member will be able to use this technology at no additional cost.”

Sergey Vishnevetsky, ODA Development Director, said, “Under the hood, STEP SDK will be supported by ODA’s own 3D solid modeler, which is being developed to meet our 3D modeling requirements for Autodesk® Revit®, IFC and DWG data.”

Availability and Pricing

STEP SDK will be part of the standard ODA membership package, available to all ODA members at no additional cost. A STEP SDK beta will be available to ODA members by the end of 2021.

Pricing for ODA memberships can be found at opendesign.com/pricing.
