Krasnoyarsk Delegation at ECF2004
        Maxim Likhachev
        Head of Engineering Analysis Group,
        CAD Department, KZK Inc.

On October 12th -14th our delegation visited the European CADIA Forum, traditionally held at Disneyland, Paris, Newport Bay hotel.

Newport Bay

It was the 8th annual large-scale meeting, bringing together CATIA users from around the world. The other NIS delegations were from "Rubin", Antonov ASTC, Russian representatives of IBM and Russian partners of IBM/Dassault (GetNet, Bi-Petron, Mebius).

By tradition the Forum started with the welcome speech of Bernard Francis, one of the founders of Dassault Systems. "The case is clear" was the motto of ECF2004.

Opening

The sessions and workshops were held simultaneously in 9 auditoriums and, unfortunately, we were not able to attend all presentations that were of strong interest for us. The talks were focused on a broad range of issues, from analytic and marketing reports to real life experiences of PLM deployment from business representatives and technology-specific sessions, targeting technical experts.

The Forum provided us a lot of opportunities for informal contacts between experts. In particular, our delegation succeeded to have many useful meetings with the colleagues and even - with our competitors.

Among the exhibitions introduced, the exposition of PLM solutions from DS and its partners has attracted most of attention. Along with the demonstration of software products, it offered a perfect opportunity to evaluate some of the PLM solutions and to discuss them with highly qualified PLM specialists. A good deal of exhibitors presented projects within the engineering analysis systems. It reflects the main trend of development of such systems - further integration with CAD tools. The exhibition also offered some interesting hardware solutions, like devices for virtual reality and 3D mouse.

The central idea of ECF was for sure the demonstration of the latest PLM technologies from Dassault Systems whose key point is to develop a new digital enterprise (Enterprise PPR Hub) on the base of Dassault Systems current portfolio CATIA/ENOVIA/DELMIA. Another goal is to provide the tools for entire product life cycle, based on SmarTeam system. With each new release the system gets better integrated with CATIA and - very interesting! - with external applications. At the moment SmarTeam provides templates mainly for small and medium businesses.

As we know, the main objective for PLM is complete collaboration between all services throughout the product life cycle. Within the DS concept, ENOVIA is the key element to support this collaboration enabling to accumulate and analyse the data generated by CATIA and DELMIA. ENOVIA and DELMIA are getting more popular throughout the world. Unfortunately, in Russia we know no company deploying DELMIA or ENOVIA.

We got a perfect chance to meet up and talk with the representatives of companies of similar profile. In the discussions we have concluded that the solutions, we have received within the experimental project in our company, look quite competitive. On the other hand, this project is still only a fundament for the complete PLM solution, also taking into account that PLM itself is always progressing.

Summarizing our impressions, we consider our participation in ECF2004 to be definitely useful. We've got a lot of first hand information regarding the PLM further development that helps us to better formulate the next steps of our project. Our delegation is grateful for the invitation to ECF2004 and hospitality of Dassault Systems and Russian representatives of IBM, as well as to our friends from GetNet for the trip arrangement.
