IBM and Dassault Systemes (DS) actively promote extension of their Russian PLM market
D.Levin

On 16 September, in Moscow took place the PLM Forum annually organized by IBM - the main partner of DS (www.3ds.com) in worldwide distributing of its PLM solutions, also in Russia. The goal of these forums is to support a process of increasing applications of the whole DS package at the Russian market, which can probably become a substantial part of the world business for DS and its partners.

The Forum was organized in the overburdened center of Moscow where everybody could clearly feel the reality of market and its financial component.

At the same time, the forum was held in the MHAT, the Moscow Chekhov Art Theater (http://www.theatre.ru/emain.html) - the famous Russian theater, which pleasantly and usefully reminded a substantial role of humanitarian factors in the business success in Russia.

The forum definitely attracted a keen interest, so that early in the morning there was a line of those wishing to pass a security control to get to the forum registration.

Narrowness of the small-stage part of the historical theater building (obviously intended for another type of public) has emphasized a brilliant job of the organizing committee.

It was a pleasure to observe effective actions of the organizing committee chairman - Nikolai Bondarenko, the chief of the Moscow IBM PLM office (http://www.ibm.com/ru/) - who was becoming visible only at the moment it was actually required and made decisions instantly.

The official programme of the forum included presentations of:

  • Foreign managers and experts who characterized tendencies of the PLM development in general and also the DS PLM-solutions,
  • Experts from the Moscow IBM PLM office who systematically characterized the main features of the key DS solutions including their fresh features, as well as examples of applications,
  • Representatives of customers who achieved serious inspiring results in applying the DS solutions
and also an impressive cultural programme.

A key point of the presentation of Raimo Nikkila (PLM Nordic, CEMA) was that by 2010 the main instrument for acting in the world market is expected to be a style called PLM On Demand.

Francis Bernard (one of the DS founders, inventors of CATIA, and a responsible for the DS Eastern direction) spoke about "PLM as revolution in collaborative design and manufacturing". He presented a clear picture of the development from a drawing desk to an integrated, complete and knowledge-based system of modeling of the whole life-cycle.

[A full presentation, which was kindly promised to us by Francis Bernard, will be published at isicad.ru later. A detailed Russian description of this presentation has been published at isicad.ru/ru/events.php?id=1]

Raimo Puro, the CEO of Delfoi presented experience of applications of DELMIA.

Leonid Kuznetsov from the Moscow IBM PLM office gave an overview on SMARTEAM and ENOVIA combined with examples from the Russian industry.

Sergey Ocheredko (Moscow IBM PLM office) outlined new features of the CATIA system.

Alexei Porai-Koshits from MHAT, together with the specialists from the Moscow company ComputerAge, spoke about "capabilities of CATIA and SMARTEAM for design and production of theater decorations".

One of the most popular Russian actors, art director of MHAT, O.Tabakov, was given a symbolic CATIA certificate and tasted it.

One of the largest Russian aircraft projects, the Russian Regional Jet (RRJ), was presented by the IT director from Civil Planes of Sukhoi - A.Krasnov.

A presentation of N.Lyaskovski (Krasnoyarsk Agricultural Machines Plant) and P.Goldovski (HETNET Company from Moscow, http://www.hetnet.ru/eng/index.html ) was about a successful application of PLM solutions at the Krasnoyarsk Plant (see a full version of this presentation at http://isicad.ru/2004/presentations.php).

A PLM experience of a well-known Ukrainian aircraft company "ANTK Antonov" and its relations with Airbus was outlined in a brief presentation.

V.Gerasimov spoke about wonderful results of creating an Engineering Center at the Kriogenmash (http://www.cryogenmash.ru/index_eng.htm), which moved from UGS solutions to CATIA and, during 2 years, achieved USD 40 millions of overall projects cost.

When speaking about growth of interest to PLM in Russia, Francis Bernard remarked that he will not be surprised if in 2005 such a Moscow Forum will require not one but two days.

I believe that, for further promotion of PLM in Russia, it will be reasonable to organize a similar practical seminar in Novosibirsk - since it is unlikely that a lot of big eastern Russian industrial enterprises will delegate their representatives to a 1-2-days event in Moscow. LEDAS and isicad are going to contribute into this development.
